ירמיהו, פרק ט״ו, פסוק ג׳

A severe decree of judgment unfolds in stages, moving from the loss of life to the ultimate humiliation of the dead. God actively appoints four distinct agents of destruction, assigning each a specific role in the devastation. The concept of families is used metaphorically [רד״ק, מצודת ציון], representing four different categories of disaster or groups of destroyers that God sets over the people [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The sequence of punishment begins with the sword, which is tasked simply with killing. Once the people have fallen, the judgment shifts to the desecration of their remains. Dogs are assigned to drag and pull the bodies [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. Following their natural instincts, the dogs pull the corpses from place to place or drag them out into the open, often consuming them in the process [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

The final acts of consuming and ruining the bodies are divided between the birds of the sky and the wild beasts. The birds are tasked with eating the exposed flesh of the fallen. However, since the beasts of the earth do not eat meat, their specific role in this devastation is to destroy and degrade the corpses by trampling them heavily under their feet [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].
