A severe and sudden divine decree can fall upon entire nations and kingdoms as a direct result of their actions. In a fleeting moment, God can issue a judgment of complete ruin and devastation upon a nation because of its evil [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This severe judgment unfolds through three distinct phases of destruction: violently uprooting that which is firmly planted, shattering and demolishing existing structures, and ultimately bringing about total annihilation [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
However, this swift devastation carries a deeper meaning, drawing upon the imagery of a craftsman shaping his work. Just as a potter might break a clay vessel for a brief moment in order to fix it and mold it into a new creation, God's decrees of ruin operate on the same principle. The inner purpose of such destruction is never pointless annihilation. Rather, His ultimate goal is to tear down the flawed structure in order to bring about true correction and repair [מלבי״ם].
