ירמיהו, פרק ל׳, פסוק י״ב

Jeremiah 30:12Sefaria

כִּ֣י כֹ֥ה אָמַ֛ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אָנ֣וּשׁ לְשִׁבְרֵ֑ךְ נַחְלָ֖ה מַכָּתֵֽךְ׃

The nation of Israel in exile is portrayed as a critically ill patient suffering from a fatal, hopeless condition. This medical metaphor captures the sheer depth of a crisis that blends both physical agony and spiritual collapse, leading to a point where all natural remedies and human assistance seem entirely useless. Yet, within this profound despair lies the realization that the devastating blow is actually a necessary step toward an ultimate, divine healing.

The prophetic message is directed toward the congregation of Israel, emphasizing the severity of her condition through concepts of intense pain, heavy disaster, and extreme danger [רד״ק, מצודת ציון]. The injury is twofold, combining a severe, visible external break with a deep, sickening internal disease. This combination of external trauma and internal illness makes recovery exceptionally difficult. One perspective suggests that the illness is so deeply rooted it is as if it were an inherited condition, passed down from previous generations [אברבנאל].

On a symbolic level, the physical ailments represent the intense suffering and poverty of exile, while the internal sickness reflects the spiritual decay of the people. Because the nation has lost the basic foundations of faith and morality, they are entirely unable to listen to human healers, such as prophets and spiritual guides [מלבי״ם]. The sheer volume of their sins has created a situation so seemingly hopeless that even their greatest supporters and caretakers have given up on them [אברבנאל].

A legal perspective views the relationship between God and Israel as a marriage. According to law, a husband is not obligated to provide medical healing for his wife if her illness is the direct result of her own deliberate negligence or crime. Since Israel's spiritual sickness was brought about by her own intentional wrongdoing, God is technically not bound by strict justice to heal her. Nevertheless, God steps in to heal the nation purely out of loving kindness. Acting as a healer who charges no fee, He remarkably uses the very same instruments that delivered the blow to bring about the ultimate cure [חומת אנך].

Even amidst such a grim diagnosis of an incurable wound, a hidden promise remains. Although the current state of brokenness appears fatal, a renewed hope will eventually blossom for Israel, and the enemies who caused their suffering will ultimately face their own punishment [רד״ק].
