איוב, פרק י״ג, פסוק ג׳

Job 13:3Sefaria

אוּלָ֗ם אֲ֭נִי אֶל־שַׁדַּ֣י אֲדַבֵּ֑ר וְהוֹכֵ֖חַ אֶל־אֵ֣ל אֶחְפָּֽץ׃

A profound shift occurs as a suffering man abandons his fruitless debates with human companions to seek a direct, piercing confrontation with his Creator to understand the meaning of his pain. A deep contrast emerges between him and his peers. Recognizing God's greatness leads his friends either to surrender in silence [ביאור שטיינזלץ] or to offer false arguments that twist his true intentions [רמב״ן, תקות אנוש]. He, however, declares that he no longer has any desire to argue with them. From now on, his sole request is to turn directly to God and manage the discussion entirely with Him [רש״י, מצודת דוד].

In his appeal, he addresses God through two distinct lenses. First, he turns to the aspect of God that represents personal providence over all creatures, wishing to lay out his claims at length [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective views this specific approach as an appeal to God's strict justice. According to this thought, he complains that God is actively delaying the departure of his soul, essentially prolonging his suffering by holding back death, and he intends to speak to God firmly about this [אלשיך].

He then shifts to address God through a lens representing absolute divine power [מלבי״ם], or alternatively, the attribute of kindness [אלשיך]. Through this approach, he seeks to present intellectual proofs and logical deductions [מלבי״ם]. He wishes to conduct this debate willingly and pleasantly, rather than out of hardship, hoping to discover if his agonizing trials are actually acts of love rooted in divine kindness [אלשיך].

Ultimately, the goal of this direct confrontation is to resolve the apparent contradiction between God's absolute justice and the painful reality of suffering. He demands to understand how God's personal providence aligns with true justice, completely rejecting the false justifications his friends try to attribute to God's leadership [מלבי״ם, רמב״ן].
