הֲפָנָ֥יו תִּשָּׂא֑וּן אִם־לָאֵ֥ל תְּרִיבֽוּן׃

In the midst of profound suffering, Job confronts his friends and deeply questions the motives behind their arguments. He challenges them to consider whether their defense of God's justice stems from a genuine search for truth or from a twisted desire to flatter the Creator at the expense of honesty.

The primary approach among commentators is that Job asks his friends if they are simply trying to flatter God by showing Him favoritism. In human interactions, people often flatter powerful individuals, unjustly defending their actions or protecting their honor through lies and deceit. However, Job makes it clear that God has no desire for this kind of defense. He despises deceitful flattery and does not need anyone to advocate for Him using falsehoods [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Job questions the very nature of their dispute, asking if they are arguing solely on God's behalf and inventing false claims against him just to protect the divine reputation [רש״י]. Their entire argument seems to be fought purely for God's sake, rather than for the sake of the truth [רמב״ן, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

Presenting a different angle, another perspective frames this confrontation as a double dilemma, rooted in God's earlier testimony that Job is a pure and upright man [אלשיך]. Job presents his friends with two distinct options. If they secretly know he is truly righteous, but choose to falsely accuse him just to protect God's honor and avoid any appearance of divine injustice, they are guilty of speaking lies merely to show God favoritism. Conversely, if they genuinely believe Job is a sinner who deserves his terrible suffering, they are actually arguing against God Himself, directly contradicting His own prior testimony regarding Job's absolute innocence.
