Job 16:3Sefaria

The debate between Job and his friends reaches a point of deep frustration, prompting a harsh critique of the uselessness of their repetitive claims. Job questions whether there will ever be an end to their empty, meaningless talk [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. There is a fundamental difference between words of wisdom and words of wind. A discussion built on logic and proof eventually reaches a natural conclusion where the truth becomes clear, requiring no further debate. However, a person speaking empty words can continue talking forever. Such a person does not listen to counterarguments and avoids any deep thought Because these empty claims lack meaning, they can be invented endlessly. Job wonders why his friends continue to recycle the exact same arguments using different words, rather than offering any new insights

He then challenges the motivation behind his friend's continued replies. The primary approach among commentators is that Job is asking what pressure or inner courage drives his friend to speak Others understand this motivation as a desire to clarify and evaluate [רש״י, מלבי״ם], or as an attempt to achieve victory and force an opinion [אבן עזרא]. Job asks what compels his friend to keep responding. There is no obligation to speak, and if a person lacks true knowledge, it is better to remain silent Conversely, if the friend believes his words are grounded in truth and intellect, Job demands to know what evidence supports these claims, as no real proof has been offered to justify another response Even if the friend thinks that simply repeating his position will make it stronger and prevent it from being dismissed, Job makes it clear that repeating the same answer without any new ideas adds absolutely no validity or triumph to the argument [אלשיך].
