Job envisions a dramatic role reversal, imagining a reality where his friends are the ones enduring unbearable suffering while he stands before them as the comforter. Commentators are divided on the tone of this imagined scenario, debating whether his words are a sarcastic attack or a rhetorical expression of profound bewilderment.

One approach views Job’s statement as a biting critique. He tells his friends that if the tables were turned, he too could easily weaponize language to mock them [רש"י]. Job is intimately familiar with the art of preaching; if he were not in such agony, he could effortlessly string together the same empty, meaningless sermons they offer [רמב"ן, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In this light, his physical gestures, such as shaking his head, would merely be acts of mockery [תקות אנוש], or a hollow display of fake sympathy. He would coldly dismiss them, instructing them to stay quiet and suffer bravely, mirroring the exact treatment they are giving him [רש"י, רמב"ן].

Conversely, other commentators read Job's words as a rhetorical question filled with genuine disbelief at his friends' behavior. He wonders how he could ever treat them with such cruelty if they were the ones in pain. He asks whether he would ever falsely accuse them of sins and add to their heartbreak the way they have done to him [מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם]. Knowing they were as innocent as he is, he would never contradict their cries [אלשיך]. Instead, he would join his words with theirs, validating their claims and protesting the injustice alongside them [מלבי"ם, אלשיך]. His shaking head would not be a gesture of mockery, but an expression of deep wailing, sincere sorrow, and true shared pain [מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם]. His compassion would be so profound that even if he knew their suffering somehow served to atone for his own soul, he would still genuinely grieve for their agony [אלשיך].
