Judges 13:19Sefaria

Once it becomes clear that the mysterious guest has no intention of sharing a regular meal, the prepared food is repurposed into a direct offering to God. This marks a dramatic turning point, shifting the encounter from an ordinary earthly gathering into the realm of the miraculous, where the true identity of the visitor is finally revealed. A young goat, along with its accompanying grain offering, is brought to a rock that serves as a makeshift altar for a burnt offering to God [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

At that time, bringing a sacrifice anywhere outside the central Tabernacle in Shiloh was strictly forbidden. However, this act was permitted as a temporary, exceptional measure because the instructions came directly from the visitor, who was viewed at that moment as a prophet with the authority to temporarily suspend the rule [רד״ק, אברבנאל].

As the offering is made, an extraordinary event unfolds. The primary approach among commentators is that the angel performed a visible miracle, drawing fire either out of the rock itself or down from heaven to consume the sacrifice. As the flames grew higher, the angel stepped into the fire and ascended to heaven. This spectacular display served a specific purpose: it acted as a divine sign, proving that the unusual sacrifice outside the Tabernacle was indeed authorized [אהבת יהונתן].

Other perspectives offer different understandings of the miraculous events. Some suggest the angel performed rapid, unrecorded physical feats, such as preparing the animal with unnatural speed [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Others connect the events to the angel's very name, which implies wonder, indicating that he simply acted according to his wondrous nature [אברבנאל]. Another view proposes that the acts were actually concealed, performed in a hidden and mysterious manner [אברבנאל].

Throughout this incredible display, the couple stood and watched. A question arises regarding how this sacrifice could be performed in the presence of the angel without appearing as though it were being offered to the angel himself, which would be a form of idol worship. To prevent any misunderstanding, the angel deliberately stepped away from the altar and stood right alongside the couple. Together, the three of them watched the fire consume the sacrifice, making it absolutely clear that the offering was directed exclusively to God [אלשיך].

Witnessing the miracle and the angel's fiery ascent left a profound sense of terror. The husband felt a sudden, gripping fear of suffering two types of death: a physical end in this world for having seen a divine being, and a spiritual end in the world to come for bringing a sacrifice outside the Tabernacle, under the belief that an angel lacked the authority to permit such an act. However, this panic was met with calm, logical reassurance. The fact that God willingly accepted the offering and revealed such wonders and good news was clear proof that He had no intention of causing them harm [צאינה וראינה, אהבת יהונתן].
