Leviticus 20:5Sefaria

When a human justice system fails to hold a wrongdoer accountable, Divine providence steps in to ensure justice is served. In such cases, the consequences of the sin ripple outward, extending beyond the individual to affect their immediate surroundings. God intervenes directly in situations where the earthly court has been negligent [אור החיים]. This intervention can manifest as the removal of Divine protection, leaving the individual completely exposed to harm and disaster [הכתב והקבלה], or it may come in the form of a physical plague in this world [ביאור יש״ר].

The circle of accountability notably includes the sinner's family. The primary approach among commentators is that family members naturally tend to cover up and protect their relatives from the law. By hiding the crime, they become passive accomplices and share in the guilt Another perspective suggests that the concept of family here does not necessarily mean blood relatives. Instead, it refers to individuals who share a similar spiritual nature with the sinner [ביאור יש״ר], or those who actively support and assist in the crime [בכור שור, נתינה לגר].

Despite this collective responsibility, Divine justice is highly precise. The most severe punishment of being spiritually cut off from the nation falls exclusively on the primary sinner. Family members who merely covered up the crime do not receive this ultimate penalty; rather, they face worldly suffering However, if the relatives did not just turn a blind eye but actively planned to participate in the idolatry, they are judged for those intentions and will also be spiritually cut off simply for the thought From a legal standpoint, this heavenly punishment of being cut off is considered equivalent to a human death penalty, which consequently exempts the sinner from any financial payments associated with their crime [תורה תמימה].

The punishment also extends to anyone who is led astray to participate in this idolatry. In biblical terms, the concept of straying after foreign gods represents a deep spiritual rebellion, an attraction to foreign masters, and even the harboring of sinful thoughts in the heart There is a clear warning that if the initial wrongdoer is left unpunished, others will inevitably learn from their actions and be dragged down the same path [אבן עזרא]. This group of followers includes the priest who physically performs the ritual of passing the child through the fire. While the priest does not face the same earthly penalty of stoning as the father, he is still severely punished by God as an accomplice to the sin [צפנת פענח].

Regarding the nature of Molech, there is a fundamental disagreement. One view maintains that Molech is the name of a specific statue, and its unique worship involved handing children to priests to be passed through fire. According to this approach, the law teaches that anyone who worships any other idol using this specific, cruel method is liable for the penalty of being cut off, even if fire is not the standard ritual for that particular idol [רש״י, מזרחי]. Conversely, another viewpoint argues that Molech is not the name of a specific deity at all. Instead, the word stems from the concept of kingship, describing any entity or power that a person crowns as a god. Therefore, the sin that incurs this severe penalty is the very act of passing children to any worshipped force, including rituals of witchcraft and attempting to communicate with the dead [רמב״ן].

Ultimately, the punishment involves being uprooted and removed from society. This personal penalty applies as long as the majority of the nation continues to follow the proper path. However, if the entire society is drawn into these grievous sins and intentionally turns a blind eye to the corruption, the consequence is no longer limited to the individual being cut off. In such a state of widespread moral collapse, the punishment becomes the exile of the entire nation [העמק דבר].
