וַיֹּצֵ֨א מֹשֶׁ֤ה אֶת־כׇּל־הַמַּטֹּת֙ מִלִּפְנֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶֽל־כׇּל־בְּנֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּרְא֥וּ וַיִּקְח֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ מַטֵּֽהוּ׃ {פ}

The moment of truth arrives, bringing a quiet but undeniable end to the bitter dispute over the priesthood. A simple, public display of physical evidence forces the leaders of the nation to confront reality and acknowledge the choice made by God.

Moses brings the staffs out of the Tent of Meeting and presents them to the entire nation of Israelites. He does not show the results privately to the tribal leaders. This public presentation is meant to completely uproot any lingering doubts hidden within the hearts of the common people, even if the leaders themselves already accept the outcome [העמק דבר]. When the leaders look at their staffs, they find them completely dry and unchanged, looking exactly as they did when first placed in the holy tent [קיצור בעל הטורים]. Beside Aaron's staff, the other walking sticks appear entirely ordinary, lacking any life and clearly inferior [שפתי כהן].

The primary approach among commentators is that each leader carefully examines his own staff. They identify their personal sticks with absolute certainty, recognizing their own handwriting, carved names, or distinct personal marks. This careful inspection proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that no trickery has taken place. In that exact moment, seeing that only Aaron's staff has sprouted flowers and almonds, they immediately understand that God has chosen Aaron alone [ביאור יש״ר].

The final action of the leaders taking back their staffs carries a deep sense of finality and acceptance. They finally realize they have not been chosen to serve God in the holy space [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. What unfolds is a silent, powerful scene of quiet shame. The tribal heads pick up their lifeless branches and walk away without saying a single word, completely subdued and humbled as their prior doubts are proven entirely wrong [ברכת אשר על התורה].
