Numbers 33:14Sefaria

The journey through the desert brings the Israelites to a significant milestone marked by a deep physical and spiritual crisis. Usually, the record of their travels only lists the names of the places they stopped. However, an exception occurs at Rephidim, where the severe lack of water is explicitly noted.

This detail highlights a dramatic shift in their situation. Since leaving Elim, the Israelites had managed to find drinking water at every stop along the way. Rephidim was the very first location where they faced total dryness, signaling the true beginning of the harsh, arid desert experience [רלב״ג, רש ר הירש]. The shortage was so extreme that even the reserves they carried in their own containers completely ran out [שפתי כהן].

The primary approach among commentators is that this specific lack of water is mentioned—while other major miracles, such as the events at Marah or the falling of the manna in the desert of Sin, are left out—because Rephidim was etched into the national memory as a foundational event. It was the site where the nation tested God, a place later named for their quarreling. It was also the exact location where the open miracle of drawing water from a rock took place, and where the nation was immediately attacked by Amalek.

Beyond the physical reality, a deeper spiritual dynamic was at play. A question naturally arises regarding the miraculous well that was supposed to accompany the nation on their travels: why did it suddenly disappear at Rephidim? The answer lies in the deep connection between the physical and the spiritual. Water serves as a symbol for the Torah, and the very name of the location hints that the Israelites had relaxed their grip on their spiritual duties. As long as the nation engaged with the spiritual water that nourished their souls, the physical well traveled alongside them to provide for their bodily needs. The moment they neglected their spiritual focus, the physical water was withdrawn from them [שפתי כהן].
