במדבר, פרק ל״ג, פסוק ט״ו

פרשת מסעי

Numbers 33:15Sefaria

וַיִּסְע֖וּ מֵרְפִידִ֑ם וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ בְּמִדְבַּ֥ר סִינָֽי׃

The journey through the wilderness was marked by numerous encampments, but none as deeply transformative as the arrival at the Sinai Desert. This location stands out as a central anchor in the travels of the Israelites, a place where they settled for an extended period to undergo experiences that would shape their identity forever. Geographically, the area known as the Sinai Desert is actually identified with the Desert of Sin [חזקוני].

During this prolonged stay, monumental events took place. It was here that the Israelites received the Torah and constructed the Tabernacle [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, the record of the journey remains entirely silent about the giving of the Torah at this specific location. This is highly unusual, especially since other stops along the route explicitly highlight the miracles and events that occurred there.

This glaring omission carries a profound message. Once the Torah was given, it ceased to be bound by physical geography or constrained to a specific moment in history. By leaving out the mention of the Torah's revelation at this encampment, the account ensures that the Torah is not viewed merely as a local event tied to Sinai. Instead, it remains an eternal reality that transcends any specific time and place [נתינה לגר].
