Proverbs 12:17Sefaria

The power of human speech is measured not only during life's most dramatic moments but in the quiet rhythm of daily routine. Truth and falsehood are not isolated events that occur only within the walls of a courtroom. Rather, they are deeply rooted character traits that ultimately determine a person's reliability when they are truly put to the test.

The primary approach among commentators is that there is a direct connection between everyday habits of speech and trustworthiness in giving testimony. A person who trains themselves to speak honestly about trivial, everyday matters naturally speaks with an effortless, quiet sincerity Because their inner character perfectly matches their outward behavior, they are completely trustworthy. When called upon, they will naturally provide honest testimony that protects the innocent and ensures justice On the other hand, someone who casually lies in their private life will inevitably become a false witness. Driven by a deep-seated attachment to falsehood and injustice, they will naturally spread deceit Recognizing this pattern, a judge who encounters a witness known for everyday dishonesty must investigate their claims thoroughly, as their testimony is almost certainly tainted with lies [מצודת דוד].

Inside the courtroom, the very manner in which a person speaks often gives away the truth. An honest person speaks calmly and peacefully, knowing that the truth stands firmly on its own. Their simple, straightforward words are entirely sufficient to bring about a just outcome. In sharp contrast, liars often resort to making noise, swearing false oaths, and using manipulative tricks. A wise judge can observe these behaviors and easily spot the deception hidden within their words [מלבי״ם]. Just as the honest individual naturally brings forth justice, the false witness inevitably produces deceit

Beyond the realms of law and personal morality, this dynamic also serves as a philosophical lesson about human thought and the pursuit of wisdom. When the foundational ideas upon which a person builds their learning are true and reliable, the conclusions they reach will be accurate and sound. However, if a person allows deceptive or false premises into their thinking process, the unavoidable result will be error and deceit [עמנואל הרומי].
