A person's harmful actions do not always stem from a moment of weakness or a simple lack of judgment. Often, they are the result of a destructive combination of pride, disrespect, and anger, driven by a deep sense of superiority. The root of this behavior is a profound arrogance and rudeness [רש"י, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא]. This pride is the core problem, as it transforms the individual into a mocker who completely refuses to listen to moral instruction [רש"י]. This deterioration happens over time. A spiteful person might initially debate matters of wisdom and faith in a rational way. However, once pride takes over, he entirely shuts his ears to reason and resorts to mocking the wise [מלבי"ם].
This arrogance and mockery do not remain confined to speech; they inevitably spill over into malicious actions. These actions are fueled by an intense anger [מצודת ציון], representing a state where rage completely overrides a person's willpower and self-control [אבן עזרא]. It is a crossing of the boundaries of normal human behavior [מלבי"ם]. Because of his inflated pride, such a person views others as completely worthless. Consequently, he is capable of hurting people cruelly, simply for his own amusement and sport [רלב"ג, מצודת דוד]. Even if it appears that his faults are limited to cruel words and jokes, his internal rage will eventually push him toward acts of physical destruction, such as breaking things in a fit of anger [אלשיך]. His behavior is in no way guided by wisdom, but is entirely dictated by the malicious rage living inside him [עמנואל הרומי].
Another perspective views this mockery as a calculated tool for deception. A malicious person might intentionally present himself as a careless, unstable joker. By playing this role, he ensures that the harm he causes looks like a simple accident or a foolish mistake. In reality, his actions are not the result of foolishness at all; they are carefully planned in advance and executed with deliberate malice [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, it is also possible that these traits do not develop in a sequence. Instead, the concepts of malice, arrogance, and mockery are simply interchangeable titles for anyone who chooses to act out of such spiteful rage [עמנואל הרומי].
