Ruth 2:3Sefaria

Stepping into the agricultural fields to find food was not merely a physical task, but a journey marked by practical caution, deep modesty, and hidden Divine guidance. Rather than simply arriving and working, Ruth took deliberate steps to ensure her safety. The primary approach among commentators is that she walked back and forth from the city to the fields several times before collecting any grain. By setting up landmarks, she ensured she would not lose her way in the evening and face danger [רש״י, אלשיך]. Others suggest this careful movement reflects her strict search for a safe environment filled with decent, righteous workers She ultimately found a nearby field without having to wander far [מלבי״ם]. Despite her difficult circumstances, she set out with joy and total acceptance of her fate, feeling as joyful going out as she would returning with grain, her steps accompanied by constant prayer to God She established a steady routine, working through the six weekdays and resting on the Sabbath [מנחת שי].

As she began to collect the single fallen stalks left behind by the harvesters, she utilized the agricultural gifts mandated for the poor Her actions were defined by extreme modesty. She did not push her way among the bundles of grain or mix with the laborers. Instead, she kept a significant distance behind the harvesters to avoid casual conversation or joking. Once she recognized that the workers in this specific field were honest and proper, she felt secure enough to follow behind them, yet she maintained her quiet solitude while she worked

Her arrival at a field belonging to Boaz, a relative of her late father-in-law Elimelech, appeared to be a simple coincidence, as she had no prior knowledge of who owned the land [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, commentators universally agree that this was precise Divine providence dressed in the ordinary clothing of natural events. God directly guided her steps to Boaz to lay the foundation for her ultimate redemption and the future establishment of King David's dynasty [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Heaven arranged for the exact right person and place to become her destiny Because Ruth was a woman of exceptional beauty, she was vulnerable to the inappropriate thoughts or intentions of onlookers. To protect her, God preemptively led her to the property of a righteous man whose servants shared his high moral character, ensuring she would remain completely unharmed This fateful meeting was a holy occurrence where God answered her continuous prayers and kept a close watch over her path [אשכול הכופר].
