Exodus 6:25Sefaria

As the lineage of the Levite tribe concludes, the focus narrows specifically to the family of Eleazar and the birth of his son, Phinehas. The sons of Eleazar's brother, Ithamar, are left out of this record. This intentional selection highlights the crucial role Phinehas will eventually play in the history of the Israelites, as well as the eternal honor of the priesthood that will be granted to him and his descendants

While Aaron’s wife is explicitly named earlier in the record, the identity of Eleazar’s wife remains anonymous. She is known only by her ancestry, described as a descendant of Putiel The exact identity of Putiel is a matter of discussion, as the figure does not appear anywhere else. On a simple level, Putiel was likely a highly respected and prominent man among the Israelites of that generation, and his family is recorded as a mark of praise Some suggest the family's names reflect their cultural environment, blending Egyptian and Hebrew elements to describe someone dedicated to the honor of God [שד״ל]. This is much like the name Phinehas itself, which carries ancient Egyptian roots [אם למקרא] and whose precise, full spelling has been carefully preserved throughout ancient manuscripts [מנחת שי].

However, because Putiel is completely unknown elsewhere, the primary approach among commentators is that this is not a personal name, but rather a descriptive title of her ancestry She actually descended from a union of two distinct historical families: the lines of Joseph and Jethro The title Putiel serves as a subtle nod to the defining actions of both ancestors—Jethro, who once fattened calves for idol worship before recognizing God, and Joseph, who successfully subdued and conquered his negative desires

Eleazar's marriage was a highly deliberate choice. He sought a partner who would be a genuine support in his spiritual life. Even though her ancestry was not entirely from the most elite, traditional lineage, her deep commitment to Eleazar's spiritual journey is exactly what earned her the merit of raising a great leader like Phinehas [העמק דבר].

The genealogical record then closes by summarizing the heads of the Levite families. This final seal serves to emphasize that Moses and Aaron stand as the undisputed leaders of the tribe [ספורנו]. Despite their personal differences—such as Moses' difficulty with speech compared to Aaron's natural eloquence—they were entirely equal in the mission given to them by God, carrying out their duties without any flaw in their standing [יריעות שלמה].
