Ezekiel 7:24Sefaria

The devastating reality of exile involves not only physical displacement but also the complete shattering of a nation's pride. As the land and its sacred spaces are handed over to foreigners, the arrogance of the inhabitants is brought to a painful end. God orchestrates this downfall by bringing in the most cruel, lowly, and evil of the idol-worshipping nations Specifically, this refers to the Chaldean empire After the Israelites are driven from their homeland, these foreign invaders will arrive to take over their houses and settle in their place [מלבי״ם].

This transition of power serves a specific purpose: God will put a complete stop to the pride, honor, and boasting of the brazen members of the nation This dismantling of arrogance is particularly directed at the leadership class, ensuring that the kings, government ministers, and the priesthood are entirely removed from power [מלבי״ם].

As the land is conquered, a profound shift occurs regarding its revered spaces. The primary approach among commentators is that these locations will suffer deep desecration, disgrace, and a total loss of holiness Alternatively, this shift is understood as a transfer of property, where the sites are simply inherited and taken over by foreign hands [רש״י].

There are three distinct views on what exactly is subjected to this desecration or takeover. One perspective maintains that the target is the Temple itself, including its inner sanctuary and the Holy of Holies [מצודת דוד]. Another viewpoint suggests that the invaders will take over the altars used for idol worship, which had become popular gathering places for the masses [רש״י]. A third approach focuses on the people rather than the places, pointing to the priests themselves. These religious leaders had adopted the practices of idol worshippers while arrogantly boasting of their own purity, even claiming that anyone who touched them would become holy. Ultimately, this imagined, hypocritical holiness will be thoroughly disgraced and brought to an end [מלבי״ם].
