כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֑ה רָעָ֛ה אַחַ֥ת רָעָ֖ה הִנֵּ֥ה בָאָֽה׃

A breaking point is reached when a prophecy brings news of absolute and unprecedented ruin. It marks a point of no return where a final decree is sealed, signaling a complete and final disaster rather than a mere warning. The primary approach among commentators is that this extraordinary event is entirely without parallel, aimed specifically at the destruction of the Temple [רש י ומצודת דוד]. However, another translation tradition interprets the impending doom not just as a single unique event, but as a relentless sequence of disasters chasing after one another [רד״ק].

Beyond the unique nature of the ruin, the repetition of the impending doom points to a fundamental change in how God interacts with the people [מלבי״ם]. In the past, suffering was delivered gradually. God would first strike at physical property out of mercy, hoping to awaken the people and inspire them to correct their ways. Now, the devastation strikes at the body and soul all at once. Furthermore, while previous hardships carried a positive purpose, designed to correct behavior and prevent even greater tragedies, this final disaster serves no such corrective goal. It is absolute and intended purely for punishment.

The finality of the decree is matched only by its suddenness. In previous times, God provided a period of waiting, offering the people an opportunity to repent and return to Him. Now, that window has closed, and the punishment strikes without any delay [מלבי״ם]. The grammar used to describe the arrival of this doom is specifically set in the present tense, emphasizing that the disaster is not a distant future threat, but an active reality unfolding and taking effect at this very moment [רש״י].
