Genesis 29:30Sefaria

After years of waiting, Jacob finally unites with his beloved Rachel. However, bringing a second wife into the household creates a complex reality filled with comparison, preference, and tests of loyalty. Jacob establishes his primary residence and spends most of his time in Rachel's tent [אור החיים]. The primary approach among commentators is that naturally, a man feels the deepest affection for his first wife. Therefore, Jacob's intense love for his second wife was highly unusual and went against natural human tendencies This does not mean Leah was unloved. Jacob did care for Leah in the way a husband loves his wife, but his love for Rachel was simply far greater Furthermore, his feelings for Rachel were not based on a passing passion that would fade over time; they remained completely stable and enduring despite their constant daily life together

In many ways, the presence of two sisters in one home actually intensified Jacob's love for Rachel. Just as light is most visible when surrounded by darkness, the constant comparison between the two women highlighted Rachel's exceptional qualities His affection was further deepened by Rachel's remarkable righteousness, as she had selflessly shared her secret marital signs with Leah to save her sister from public shame For Leah, this dynamic was a painful shift. Before Rachel joined the household, Leah did not feel any lack of affection from Jacob. It was only after Rachel became his wife that Leah began to acutely feel her husband's clear preference for her sister [העמק דבר].

This complex family dynamic unfolded alongside Jacob's commitment to work an additional seven years for his father-in-law. This second period of labor serves as a powerful testament to Jacob's moral integrity. Even though Laban had cruelly deceived him, Jacob refused to retaliate with dishonesty. He approached these final seven years with the exact same faithfulness, dedication, and honesty as he did the first seven Because Jacob originally intended to work only for Rachel, he was forced to reframe his mindset, treating the first seven years as payment for Leah and beginning an entirely new period of labor for Rachel, all while maintaining absolute loyalty to his commitments [הכתב והקבלה]. Emotionally, however, the two periods were vastly different. While the first seven years were characterized by joy and love, the subsequent years were clouded by sadness and the lingering pain of Laban's betrayal [יריעות שלמה].
