הושע, פרק ב׳, פסוק ו׳

Hosea 2:6Sefaria

וְאֶת־בָּנֶ֖יהָ לֹ֣א אֲרַחֵ֑ם כִּֽי־בְנֵ֥י זְנוּנִ֖ים הֵֽמָּה׃

A severe warning is issued to a straying nation, framed as a wayward mother whose actions bring heavy consequences upon her own household. If the collective nation refuses to change its ways and repent, the individuals within it will inevitably suffer for her sins [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The exact identity of these children, who will be denied mercy, is understood in a few distinct ways. One perspective views the nation as a whole as the mother, making the individual citizens her children. Alternatively, these children represent future generations who stubbornly continue the idolatrous practices of their ancestors [רד"ק]. The ultimate punishment awaiting these individuals is exile [אבן עזרא].

A sharper, more severe interpretation suggests that the children actually represent the righteous members of the nation [מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם]. According to this approach, God will not spare even the innocent. When a nation as a whole falls into sin, the world is judged based on the actions of the majority [מלבי"ם]. This harsh reality is illustrated through the metaphor of a prostitute. Just as the children of a wayward woman are often denied basic compassion and suffer for their mother's lifestyle despite having committed no wrong themselves, the righteous will tragically bear the punishment brought about by the sins of the broader nation [מצודת דוד].
