II Kings 2:13Sefaria

Following the dramatic ascent of Elijah into heaven, Elisha is left alone to begin his independent journey as a prophet. He reaches down and lifts the cloak that had fallen from his master [מצודת ציון]. This garment dropped at the exact moment Elijah was carried upward in the chariot [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The falling of the cloak carries deep spiritual meaning. In the past, Elijah used this very garment to cover his face in the cave and to part the waters of the Jordan River. It represents the physical barrier that separates a person from the spiritual realm. The cloak fell away during the ascent because, at that moment, Elijah shed all physical layers and earthly barriers, crossing over into a state of absolute holiness [מלבי״ם].

Having torn his own clothes in mourning over the loss of his teacher, Elisha gathers the fallen cloak and walks back to stand at the edge of the Jordan River. Returning to the water with this garment is a deliberate test. Elisha needs to determine if the ability to perform miracles has successfully passed on to him.

This moment reveals an important principle regarding the dynamic between a student and a teacher. As long as Elijah was alive, Elisha acted simply as his servant. During that time, the spirit of prophecy did not rest upon Elisha, and he did not perform a single miracle. This teaches that it is inappropriate for a student to issue rulings or display his own power while in the presence of his master. Yet, the moment Elijah departs, Elisha takes up the cloak and approaches the river. This action proves that the spiritual perfection he absorbed from his teacher has fully matured, and he is now prepared to continue the mission and lead on his own [אברבנאל].
