The transition of the sacred artifacts into King Solomon's newly built Temple marked a historic shift from a temporary, wandering existence to a permanent home. This major event required careful coordination to transport the holy items from their various locations, divide the labor among the carriers, and determine the final resting place for each sacred object.
The Ark of God was carried up from the City of David on Mount Zion [רד״ק, אברבנאל, מלבי״ם]. Alongside the Ark, the Tent of Meeting, which consisted of the original Tabernacle structures crafted by Moses in the wilderness, was also brought to the Temple [רש״י, רלב״ג, שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that the Tent of Meeting was transported from the great altar in Gibeon [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, אברבנאל], though another perspective suggests it was brought up directly from the city of Zion [מלבי״ם].
The relocation also included all the holy vessels housed within the tent. Some explain that this tent refers to the temporary structure King David had set up for the Ark in Zion [רש״י]. Others emphasize that these items encompassed all the original vessels crafted by Moses in the desert [רלב״ג]. Transporting these sacred objects involved a strict division of labor. The priests were exclusively tasked with carrying the Ark of the Covenant, while the Levites carried the Tent of Meeting and the remaining holy vessels.
Once the items arrived at the Temple, each was assigned a specific purpose. The Ark was brought to its permanent home in the inner sanctuary, the Holy of Holies [רד״ק, אברבנאל]. The Tent of Meeting was not reassembled. Instead, it was carefully stored away in the Temple treasuries, specifically in special upper chambers built above the main hall and the Holy of Holies [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רד״ק, אברבנאל]. The holy vessels were divided into two distinct groups. The central items made by Moses, such as the Menorah, the Table, and the Washbasin, were positioned in their proper places within the Temple for active use. The remaining vessels were placed into storage in the upper chambers alongside the dismantled Tent of Meeting [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].
