The assembly of the Israelites in Jerusalem marked a unique moment that blended two major celebrations: the dedication of the newly built Temple and the traditional pilgrimage festival. Even though King Solomon officially invited only the elders and national leaders, the general public took it upon themselves to join. Driven by a deep respect for God and their king, the masses followed their leaders to witness the magnificent new structure [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. This grand gathering actually began seven days before the festival of Sukkot. By arriving early, the people could fully participate in the Temple's dedication ceremonies while also being present to fulfill their pilgrimage duties for the upcoming holiday [רד״ק, אברבנאל].
This historic event took place during the month of Tishrei [ביאור שטיינזלץ], a period historically associated with strength and stability [מצודת ציון]. This concept of strength carries several layers of meaning. From an agricultural perspective, it is the season of the harvest, when crops and fruits are gathered to provide the firm foundation necessary to sustain human life [רד״ק, צאינה וראינה, אברבנאל]. On a spiritual level, the month is considered powerful because it is filled with major holidays and commandments—such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot—that guide a person toward spiritual perfection [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, צאינה וראינה, אברבנאל]. Additionally, the Sages explain that the month owes its title of strength to the forefathers of the nation, who are viewed as the strong pillars of the world and were born during this time [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ, צאינה וראינה, חומת אנך].
Although historically significant, the calendar placement of this month experienced a shift. Before the Exodus from Egypt and the giving of the Torah, this month was recognized by early generations as the very first month of the year, marking the creation of the world. However, once the Israelites were freed from Egypt, they were commanded to begin their calendar with the month of Nissan. Consequently, this month of strength and gathering was repositioned, becoming the seventh month in the yearly cycle [רש״י, רד״ק].
