Bringing the Ark of the Covenant into its permanent home within the Holy of Holies of Solomon's Temple marked a dramatic shift in how the sacred object was positioned. Now that the Ark had reached its final resting place and no longer needed to be carried on human shoulders, the physical arrangement of its carrying poles was altered, creating a unique visual and structural effect.
The primary approach among commentators is that the priests physically pulled the carrying poles outward toward the east. However, there are other perspectives regarding how they reached the entrance. One view suggests that the poles grew longer through a miracle [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective asserts that King Solomon specifically crafted new, longer poles to match the grander scale of the newly built Temple [רלב״ג, אברבנאל]. To allow the poles to reach the doorway, the Ark was not placed flush against the western wall but was set closer to the center of the room.
By extending the poles forward, their ends pressed against the curtain separating the main hall from the Holy of Holies. They pushed the fabric outward, creating a shape resembling a woman's breasts, but they did not tear the cloth, remaining completely hidden from direct view. On a conceptual level, this physical protrusion represents the flow of life. It is compared to the spinal cord extending from the brain, which symbolizes the Holy of Holies, to deliver vitality and energy to the heart and the rest of the body, represented by the main hall [מלבי״ם].
Extending the poles also served a highly practical purpose. They acted as a guide for the High Priest when he entered to offer incense on the Day of Atonement, ensuring he would place the incense precisely between the poles without losing his way in the enclosed space [רד״ק, אברבנאל]. Structurally, because the poles extended into the doorway, the doors of the Holy of Holies could no longer be closed. This physical barrier is the primary reason Solomon had to hang a curtain to divide the two sacred spaces [רלב״ג, רד״ק, אברבנאל].
The poles remained in this extended position permanently, honoring the biblical law that forbids removing them from the Ark. This arrangement lasted until the era of King Josiah. Ultimately, when the Temple was destroyed, the Ark and its poles did not go into exile with the Israelites. Instead, they sank directly into the earth, remaining hidden away in their exact resting place [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל, צאינה וראינה].
