Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the Temple establishes a fundamental principle for standing before the Creator: one must offer praise before making requests [אברבנאל]. He begins by declaring God’s absolute uniqueness in creation and His uncompromising loyalty to His promises.
God’s distinct nature is evident in the fact that nothing compares to Him in the heavens above or on the earth below. While heavenly forces and the laws of nature are limited, fixed, and bound by predetermined rules, God guides His world through free will and comprehensive care [רלב״ג, אברבנאל]. His greatness lies in His ability to be present in both the spiritual and physical realms at once. He oversees the smallest details of life and knows the hidden thoughts of human beings who are formed from physical matter [אלשיך]. Because of this supreme authority, no power in heaven or on earth can prevent Him from fulfilling His word [מלבי״ם].
Operating from this position of absolute power, God faithfully guards His covenant and kindness. He patiently waits and preserves the reward in order to fulfill His promises completely [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. This ongoing commitment traces back to the original pact made with the forefathers, which is actively maintained for their descendants who serve Him [רד״ק].
There is a deep distinction between these two concepts of covenant and kindness. A covenant represents the formal, official fulfillment of a vow, while kindness represents God acting beyond the strict letter of the law [אברבנאל]. When a divine guarantee, such as the continuation of David’s royal line, is rooted in this kindness, it does not rely solely on human merit or good behavior. Consequently, God will maintain His kindness and uphold His promise even if the person receiving it sins and ruins his deeds [מלבי״ם].
This dedication to the covenant and kindness is a clear demonstration of God's personal involvement in the world [רלב״ג]. However, this specific guidance is directed toward those who walk before Him with all their heart. Because God looks directly into human hearts, He grants His special kindness to those whose inner intentions are truly and completely devoted to Him, just as He found David’s heart faithful [אלשיך, רלב״ג].
