I Kings 8:19Sefaria

David held a deep and worthy desire to build a permanent home for God, yet he was ultimately told that this monumental task would fall to his son. The reason for this shift is rooted in David's history. Because his life was filled with war and the shedding of blood, it was not fitting for him to construct God's house. Instead, the responsibility was passed to his son, Solomon, who was a man of peace and rest [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Despite this restriction, David's preparations lacked nothing on a spiritual level. His pure intention was so highly valued that it is counted as if he had completed the building himself; only the physical construction was withheld. Passing the task to Solomon ensured the Temple would be built entirely for the sake of God. Because Solomon lived during a time of national rest, he could undertake the building purely for God, completely free from any hidden hope that the act of building might finally grant him peace from surrounding enemies [מלבי״ם].

To confirm this succession, the promise of who would inherit this sacred mission is described using a delicate, refined expression that simply refers to David's direct biological offspring [מצודת ציון].
