King Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the Temple gradually expands its focus to encompass those far beyond its walls. Having already asked God to accept the prayers offered physically within the sacred building, Solomon turns his attention to the Israelites who are distant from Jerusalem, specifically the warriors heading out to the battlefield [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].

These military campaigns are never undertaken arbitrarily. The soldiers only go to war after consulting God and receiving His explicit approval, whether through the guidance of a prophet or by inquiring of the Urim and Thummim [רלב״ג, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. This raises a natural question: if God has already authorized the battle and assured their success, why is further prayer required on the front lines? The answer lies in the constant human vulnerability to wrongdoing. The soldiers pray out of a lingering concern that some recent sin might obstruct their success. They plead that God will fulfill the promise He made to them through the Urim and Thummim, and that no misdeed will stand in the way of their victory [אלשיך].

Since the troops are on the move and cannot physically visit the Temple [מצודת דוד], they offer their prayers from a distance. They physically turn their bodies to face toward Jerusalem and the Temple [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ], with the intention that their prayers will ascend to heaven through the holy city and the sacred house [מצודת דוד]. Solomon asks that when the warriors pray in this manner, God will hear them and execute justice on their behalf. This means God will grant them the victory they deserve based on their spiritual standing and merits at the moment of their prayer [מלבי״ם, רלב״ג], and bring retribution upon their enemies [אברבנאל].
