The true climax of building the Temple did not occur when the physical construction ended. Rather, the structure gained its ultimate meaning only when the Divine Presence descended to rest within its walls. The defining moment unfolded as the priests, having carried the Ark of the Covenant into the Holy of Holies, set it down in its permanent resting place and stepped outside [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. The primary approach among commentators is that placing the Ark was the exact point at which the Temple fulfilled its true purpose [ביאור שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל].

This took place during an incredibly grand ceremony. Because of the massive number of sacrifices being offered, all the priests sanctified themselves together, setting aside their usual rotating shifts. They moved to the sound of Levites singing and playing music, accompanied by the priests blowing trumpets [רלב״ג]. As soon as the priests stepped out of the holy space, a thick cloud, appearing much like smoke, instantly filled the sanctuary [מצודת דוד, צאינה וראינה]. This cloud symbolized God's presence and glory descending to dwell in the building [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The manifestation was so sudden and overwhelmingly powerful that the priests physically could not remain standing to perform their service at the altar, the menorah, or the table [רלב״ג, אברבנאל, צאינה וראינה].

A deeper perspective highlights the uniqueness of this event by contrasting the temporary Tabernacle in the desert with Solomon's permanent Temple [מלבי״ם]. In the Tabernacle, the cloud only covered the tent from the outside, while the Divine light remained visible inside, reflecting a temporary dwelling. Furthermore, the furnishings in the Tabernacle were arranged starting with the Ark and ending with the simpler items, symbolizing a spiritual flow descending from the heavens into a temporary world. In the Temple, however, the process was completely reversed to represent an upward spiritual ascent. The outer vessels were brought in first, saving the Ark for last. Once this final step was complete and the Ark was in place, the cloud and God's glory merged entirely inside the structure. This union within the Temple walls signified that the Divine Presence had established an absolute, eternal home in the lower world.
