A time is coming when the ultimate revelation of God's presence will completely shatter human pride. In the face of His true greatness, any illusion of human superiority will naturally dissolve, leaving all of humanity to recognize His absolute and exclusive rule. Arrogance and haughtiness are deeply tied to a person's gaze, as pride is most visibly reflected in the way people look at others [רד״ק, רש״י]. Ultimately, every individual arrogant stare, as well as the very concept of human pride itself, will be brought low [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, שד״ל].
While the humbling of humanity might seem like a simple, repeated warning to emphasize the fall of the proud [מצודת דוד], there is a careful distinction made between two different kinds of human status. One form of pride belongs to people who possess genuine, internal qualities, such as personal wisdom or physical strength. The other form belongs to those whose greatness is merely external and circumstantial, such as wealthy individuals or political figures holding positions of power [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The specific way these two groups are humbled reveals a profound truth about willing repentance and internal submission. A physically strong or wise person does not necessarily lose their abilities; instead, they learn to lower their internal pride. Similarly, a leader does not have to be forcefully removed from office, but rather, they must bow their heart in reverence before God [מלבי״ם].
At the end of this transformative process, humanity will finally understand that their arrogance, their reliance on material wealth, and their boasting in worldly illusions were nothing more than harmful lies [שד״ל]. It will become undeniably clear that true power and exaltation belong to God alone [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. When His presence is fully revealed, every trace of human greatness will simply fade away [ביאור שטיינזלץ], leading to the universal recognition that God is the sole King over the entire earth [רד״ק].
