God’s absolute sovereignty over creation grants Him the power to disrupt the systems of nature and overpower all human wisdom. When people attempt to predict the future by relying on natural laws, the stars, or sorcery, God deliberately confounds their calculations. This exposes the emptiness of their understanding and proves that He alone directs the course of history. Because God is the one who formed the heavens and established the laws of nature, He holds the ultimate authority to prevent and cancel those laws at will By exercising this power, He cancels the heavenly signs and the astrological forecasts based upon them [רד״ק, שד״ל].
The primary approach among commentators is that the individuals attempting these predictions are astrologers who fabricate visions from their own minds. Their title is rooted in the concept of falsehood, as their prophecies routinely fail God intentionally shifts the heavenly patterns to ensure these seers make mistakes [רש״י]. Other perspectives suggest these figures might be idol priests identified by their linen garments [מלבי״ם], or individuals possessing a spiritual ability to isolate themselves and glimpse the future outside the boundaries of conventional wisdom [אבן עזרא]. Historically, this points directly to the renowned astrologers of Babylon. They confidently assured their king that the city would never fall, prompting him to celebrate with a feast rather than mount a defense. Ultimately, God shattered their counsel
These foretellers are further identified as sorcerers and seers [מצודת ציון, רד״ק], or as masters of astrology who arrogantly decree what the future holds [אבן עזרא]. God actively confuses their minds and leads them astray. When their confident predictions inevitably collapse, they are left looking like fools and madmen Furthermore, God forces these wise men to retreat backward. The exact identity of these wise men is subject to various interpretations. They may be fortune tellers who read the livers and shoulders of animals [אבן עזרא], the king's top political advisors [שד״ל], or early natural scientists who study the world strictly through cause and effect [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, all these terms, including diviners, sorcerers, and wise men, might simply be different descriptions for the exact same group of Babylonian sages [רד״ק].
Normally, the path of wisdom is one of forward progress, but God drives these intellectuals backward into foolishness [מצודת דוד]. When their declarations fail to materialize, they are forced to retreat in profound shame [שד״ל]. For the natural scientists, the experience is particularly humbling. When an expected natural outcome does not occur, they must work backward to search for a cause. Through this regression, they ultimately discover that there is no natural explanation at all, only the direct intervention of God [מלבי״ם]. In the end, God transforms their esteemed wisdom into pure nonsense, revealing to the world that all their grand thoughts and political advice were fundamentally flawed from the very beginning
