The relationship between God and His nation reaches a tragic, irreversible breaking point. Years of effort to build a faithful nation in the Land of Israel have completely unraveled, as the people have engaged in a constant, stubborn spiritual retreat, simply walking backward and away from God [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. By choosing to abandon Him [מצודת ציון], the nation has actively brought disaster upon themselves. Their continuous distancing and withdrawal is a deliberate rejection [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

In response to this ongoing distancing, God stretches out His hand to strike [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד]. The resulting destruction is not arbitrary; it falls upon the people repeatedly as a direct consequence of their own actions [מלבי״ם].

Historically, God frequently issued harsh decrees against the nation, only to repeatedly change His mind, cancel the disaster, and hold back His punishment [מצודת ציון]. However, a profound shift now occurs. God is deeply exhausted from constantly relenting and forgiving [מצודת ציון]. He will no longer reverse His decisions or hold back His judgment. Because the people have stubbornly refused to abandon their destructive paths, God's patience has finally run out, paving the way for the severe and tragic realities of loss and exile [מלבי״ם].
