וָאֶזְרֵ֥ם בְּמִזְרֶ֖ה בְּשַׁעֲרֵ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ שִׁכַּ֤לְתִּי אִבַּ֙דְתִּי֙ אֶת־עַמִּ֔י מִדַּרְכֵיהֶ֖ם לוֹא־שָֽׁבוּ׃

The punishment of exile and destruction falls heavily upon the nation, but the true tragedy lies in their stubborn refusal to learn from the pain and change their ways.

The impending exile is compared to the work of a farmer tossing grain into the air with a winnowing fork. Just as the wind scatters the flying grain in all directions, the nation will not be sent to a single, central destination. Instead, they will be scattered across many different places [רש י ומצודת דוד]. Adding a moral layer to this farming comparison, the process naturally separates the valuable crop from the useless chaff. It is the spiritual chaff—the unworthy elements of the nation—that is blown away into exile [המלבי״ם].

The people are dispersed through the city gates, representing their spread across the cities of the world, as gates serve as the primary entry and exit points [רד ק ומצודת ציון]. Alternatively, keeping with the agricultural theme, these locations represent the actual threshing floors where the grain is processed [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The devastation continues with widespread death and loss. The suffering strikes all generations, bringing the loss of young children as well as the death of adults [המלבי״ם]. The tragedy is framed as a deep bereavement because God views the people as His own children, making the loss deeply personal [הרד״ק].

Despite enduring endless blows, troubles, and heartbreak, the grim reality remains unchanged. The people refuse to absorb the moral lesson and alter their behavior. Looking at this through a broader historical lens, all of this scattering, bereavement, and loss can be understood as the fate that already befell the Ten Tribes. The ultimate tragedy is that the tribe of Judah witnessed this total ruin fall upon their brothers with their own eyes, yet they still refused to abandon their evil ways [הרד״ק].
