Defending the Divine at the expense of the truth is a dangerous path. Job warns his companions that attempting to protect God's reputation through flattery and falsehood is entirely unwanted by Him and will ultimately invite severe consequences. God will actively expose their lies and punish them [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This impending punishment will be twofold: one penalty for the actual act of lying, and another for their hypocritical flattery [אלשיך]. The divine reprimand will take a very real form, manifesting as suffering brought directly upon the friends [מלבי״ם].
The core of their offense lies in their hidden hypocrisy. Deep down, the friends know perfectly well that Job is a completely righteous man. Yet, they outwardly condemn him in order to show favoritism to God, hoping to protect His honor so that He does not appear unjust [אלשיך]. However, God knows the secrets of the heart. He recognizes that their accusations against Job are not honest mistakes, but rather malicious words driven by insincere flattery [מצודת דוד].
This hidden element of their actions carries further implications for their future. When the friends eventually stand before God in judgment, they will not be able to argue that their earthly defense of Him should count in their favor [רש״י]. Furthermore, the suffering God will bring upon them will serve as a profound test of their true convictions. God will afflict them to see if they will continue to privately justify His judgments when they are the ones in pain. Because they will inevitably complain when tragedy strikes them, their current defense of God will be exposed retroactively as a mockery born merely out of fear, proving that their spoken words and their inner feelings are entirely disconnected [מלבי״ם].
