Encountering the absolute presence of God awakens a terror so profound that it can push a person to speak words of flattery and falsehood. This reaction is born not from sincere inner faith, but from an overwhelming, paralyzing anxiety.

Commentators present two primary ways to understand the nature of this overwhelming divine force. One approach views it as a manifestation of God's absolute exaltation and loftiness [רש״י, רלב״ג, רמב״ן, אבן עזרא]. Confronted by His sheer greatness, human beings are struck with terror as they realize their own profound lowliness, feeling reduced to nothing more than dust and ashes [מלבי״ם]. A second perspective envisions this presence as a consuming, burning flame [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. Regardless of the exact nature of this encounter, the inevitable result of facing such power is a state of deep dread, trembling, and panic [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם].

The experience of facing God carries a dual weight. While the initial reaction is awe inspired by His pure majesty, it is quickly followed by the distinct dread of punishment and impending harm [מלבי״ם]. This specific fear arises from a stark realization that a fragile human being, formed from physical matter, cannot possibly justify himself or survive a strict judgment before his Creator [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, the dread of divine judgment and the reality of God's majesty are not reserved solely for the afterlife. They are meant to cast a very real fear upon a person here and now in this world, serving as a powerful deterrent against sin and deceitful speech [אלשיך].
