איוב, פרק י״ג, פסוק כ״א

Job 13:21Sefaria

כַּ֭פְּךָ מֵעָלַ֣י הַרְחַ֑ק וְ֝אֵ֥מָתְךָ֗ אַֽל־תְּבַעֲתַֽנִּי׃

Preparing for a profound confrontation, a suffering man seeks to establish the ground rules for a trial with God. Before he can freely speak his mind and present his case, he must outline two vital preconditions. He asks to be released from his intense physical pain and his paralyzing fear. If God grants these requests, it will serve as a reassuring sign that He is not turning away, but is truly listening to the cries of His servant [אלשיך].

The first obstacle involves the direct source of his suffering. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to the physical blows, pain, and severe illness that God has brought upon him. Just as a person strikes with their hand, the suffering is viewed as a heavy physical blow, and the plea is for God to lift this burden in the present world [אבן עזרא, רמב״ן, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. However, another perspective challenges this view, noting that the specific biblical concept used for this action usually implies protection rather than harm. According to this approach, the request is not about a physical strike, but rather about coercion. The plea is for God to remove the overwhelming, forced nature of the suffering and the severe hardship of the pain [רש״י, אלשיך].

The second obstacle is emotional and spiritual. He asks that God not overwhelm him with the sheer terror of His infinite greatness and absolute majesty [מלבי״ם].

These two elements—the crushing physical pain and the paralyzing dread—work together to silence his arguments. They trap his thoughts and prevent him from expressing the deep turmoil in his heart. To properly engage in this divine dialogue, he requires basic freedom and courage [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אלשיך]. Only with these two massive barriers removed can a truly fair discussion take place, regardless of whether God or the man presents their arguments first. Ultimately, the desire for this confrontation is so strong that if he cannot manage to have this discussion in the current world, he deeply hopes the terror will be lifted so he can present his case before God in the world of souls [רמב״ן].
