איוב, פרק י״ג, פסוק כ״ב

Job 13:22Sefaria

וּ֭קְרָא וְאָנֹכִ֣י אֶעֱנֶ֑ה אֽוֹ־אֲ֝דַבֵּ֗ר וַהֲשִׁיבֵֽנִי׃

Seeking clarity, Job extends an invitation to God for an open and direct dialogue, offering two distinct paths for their conversation. This appeal does not stem from a place of defiance. Rather, it is born from a sincere wish to settle the matter through an objective, reasoned discussion [אלשיך]. Once the right conditions are met, a genuine, two-way communication can finally occur [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In the first proposed scenario, God takes the lead. He would initiate the exchange by listing Job's wrongdoings. In response, Job would either answer by confessing to these faults [מלבי״ם], or he would reply to the specific charges brought against him [מצודת דוד]. If God prefers not to open the discussion, the alternative is for Job to speak first. In this reverse scenario, Job asks to present his case and requests that God provide a reply [מלבי״ם]. Job would use this opportunity to argue for his own innocence and integrity, fully expecting a response from God [מצודת דוד].

This dual request is designed to uncover the truth. By asking God to initiate, Job seeks to discover the sheer number of his sins. By asking to speak himself, he intends to demand that God reveal his specific crimes, as Job remains entirely convinced that he has committed no such offenses [מלבי״ם]. On a deeper level, this plea reveals a profound yearning to find favor in God's eyes. If God were to reach out first, it would serve as a powerful sign of His love. However, if that is not to be, Job asks that, at the very least, when he initiates the conversation, God will answer him directly rather than meeting his words with heavy silence [אלשיך].
