איוב, פרק כ״ז, פסוק י״ב

Job 27:12Sefaria

הֵן־אַתֶּ֣ם כֻּלְּכֶ֣ם חֲזִיתֶ֑ם וְלָמָּה־זֶּ֝֗ה הֶ֣בֶל תֶּהְבָּֽלוּ׃

Job confronts his friends with a direct rebuke, challenging the glaring contradiction between their firsthand observations and the hollow claims they make against him [מצודות, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The friends personally witnessed the sheer magnitude of his suffering, sitting with him in stunned silence for seven days. Given this shared reality, it makes little sense for them to spout empty accusations that he is a wicked man hiding secret sins [אלשיך, תקות אנוש]. Furthermore, they were well aware of his clear righteousness long before any tragedy struck, rendering their current claims completely baseless [תקות אנוש].

This rebuke also extends to a broader philosophical debate regarding the fate of the wicked. One perspective suggests the friends fully recognized the inevitable punishment and ruin that falls upon evil people. Because they know this reality, it is absurd for them to assume Job would ever choose such a destructive path [מצודת דוד]. They should instead take this as a warning to avoid hypocrisy and sin themselves [רש״י]. Conversely, another approach argues that Job is pointing out the exact opposite: the friends have clearly seen wicked people thrive and succeed in the world. Their foolishness lies in stubbornly maintaining that God always punishes the wicked [רמב״ן].

Beyond the philosophical debate, Job challenges the personal integrity of the friends. Since everyone agrees that hypocrisy is a despised trait that ultimately brings punishment, it is baffling that the friends resort to deceitful, empty arguments merely to explain away the success of the wicked and artificially justify the actions of God [מלבי״ם].
