Judges 4:18Sefaria

Fleeing desperately from the battlefield, the defeated army commander is intercepted by a woman offering unexpected refuge. Jael initiates the encounter, using her words and actions to craft an illusion of absolute security, carefully masking her lethal intentions. Noticing his hesitation as he weighs whether to keep running or seek shelter, she urges him to step off his escape route, enter her tent, and cast aside his fear [מצודת דוד]. By encouraging him to deviate from his path, she effectively guides him directly into her trap [מצודת ציון].

Once inside, she covers him with a thick, cloak-like garment woven with wool fringes This physical act of hospitality is highly calculated; the heavy covering is designed to soothe his nerves and lull him into a false sense of complete safety [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The private nature of a woman isolating herself with a foreign man naturally raises suspicions about what transpired behind the closed doors of the tent. One tradition maintains that the commander never touched Jael, and she retained her purity despite the highly compromising circumstances. Conversely, another perspective suggests that they did engage in intimate relations multiple times. However, this approach emphasizes that her motives were entirely righteous. She submitted to him strictly to exhaust his physical strength, ensuring he would fall into a deep, vulnerable sleep. Her actions were driven solely by the desire to bring salvation to Israel, allowing her to easily strike him down without any intention of committing a sin
