Judges 4:22Sefaria

The climax of the military pursuit brings together the general hunting his enemy and the woman who ultimately decided the battle's outcome. Having failed to find the enemy commander along the main escape route toward Harosheth Hagoyim, Barak relies on pure guesswork, assuming Sisera has hidden somewhere in the area It is also possible that local passersby point him in the direction of the fleeing general [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

As Barak approaches, Yael steps out to meet him, announcing that she knows exactly who he is looking for. She leads him into her tent, where the lifeless body of Sisera lies on the ground. Only upon seeing the tent peg driven firmly through the side of Sisera's head and deep into the earth [רש״י] does Barak realize that Yael is the one who ended the commander's life [רלב״ג].

This dramatic scene raises a major question regarding the political alliances of the time. How could Yael dare to execute the top general of Jabin, the king of Hazor, when a formal peace treaty existed between the king and her husband, Heber the Kenite? Furthermore, why is Heber entirely absent from this event?

The answer lies in the precise wording of ancient political agreements and the social standing of women during that era. First, the peace treaty was specifically established between Jabin himself and the household of Heber. The agreement strictly protected the king, not his military commander, while covering Heber's entire family. Second, Sisera sought refuge in Yael's private tent, which was separate from her husband's. According to the legal and social norms of the time, a woman was not bound by the political and military treaties signed by her husband. Because of this distinction, Heber could remain in his own tent and maintain total neutrality throughout the war, while Yael was free to act independently and eliminate Sisera without breaking the official alliance [אברבנאל].
