שופטים, פרק ד׳, פסוק כ״ד

Judges 4:24Sefaria

וַתֵּ֜לֶךְ יַ֤ד בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ הָל֣וֹךְ וְקָשָׁ֔ה עַ֖ל יָבִ֣ין מֶלֶךְ־כְּנָ֑עַן עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִכְרִ֔יתוּ אֵ֖ת יָבִ֥ין מֶלֶךְ־כְּנָֽעַן׃ {פ}

A single battle rarely concludes an entire military campaign, but a decisive win often serves as the turning point that leads to the enemy's ultimate ruin. Following their initial success, the pressure exerted by the Israelites grew steadily stronger, in a gradual process where their power increased from one encounter to the next [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון].

The primary conflict was not fought directly against Jabin, the king of Canaan, but rather against his army commander, Sisera. However, Sisera was the vital pillar of the kingdom. His downfall shattered the Canaanite military force and completely halted the kingdom's expansion. This critical blow paved the way for the total overthrow of Jabin's regime and the loss of his power, culminating in either his death or his capture [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The final elimination of Jabin represents the absolute completion of the miracle God performed for the Israelites. It was this total victory that inspired the song of thanksgiving that follows the conflict. Although Deborah and Barak are noted together as the ones singing, Deborah actually composed the song entirely on her own. Barak's name was simply included alongside hers because he was her partner in achieving the victory itself [רלב״ג].
