פרשת קרח

Numbers 18:5Sefaria

Guarding the Tabernacle and its service is not merely a technical assignment, but a vital spiritual and physical defense system for the entire nation. Maintaining proper order and keeping unauthorized individuals away protects the holiness of the site, which in turn saves the public from divine anger and disaster. The primary goal of protecting the holy area and the altar is to prevent strangers who are not priests from coming too close [ספורנו, רלב״ג, ביאור יש״ר, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators is that these duties are divided into specific zones. Guarding the Tabernacle itself is a shared responsibility between the priests and the Levites, while securing the altar rests solely on the priests [שד״ל, רש ר הירש]. However, another perspective suggests that this instruction is directed exclusively at the priests and focuses on maintaining the purity of the service itself. In this view, guarding the holy area is meant to keep out impurity, and watching over the altar ensures that disqualified sacrifices are not offered, which would bring shame to the site [העמק דבר].

Although the responsibility seems to fall entirely on the workers within the sanctuary, it is actually a broader directive aimed at the national leadership, specifically the High Court of Israel. The court is tasked with supervising the priests, warning them against laziness, and making sure that the service is carried out precisely according to God's laws, without any personal whim. When the service is performed accurately and correctly, it actively stops disasters from entering the world [תורה תמימה, רש ר הירש, מלבי״ם].

Strictly guarding the sanctuary leads to a firm promise that there will be no further divine anger upon the Israelites for violating the holiness of the altar [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Commentators agree that the assurance of no further anger points directly to recent events, specifically the plague and wrath that struck the nation following the rebellion of Korah and his followers. Now, with the priests and Levites firmly guarding the Tabernacle and blocking unauthorized entry, the Israelites are kept safe. This organized protection permanently calms the terrifying fear that anyone who approaches God's Tabernacle is doomed to die [רלב״ג].
