Numbers 33:9Sefaria

The journey through the barren desert was filled with physical challenges for the Israelites, yet certain stops provided a profound sense of comfort and divine care. Elim stands out as an oasis of abundance in an otherwise harsh landscape. The arrival at this lush location was part of a deliberate, gradual process guided by God. Initially, the Israelites traveled for three days without finding any water. Then, they reached Marah, where the water was bitter and required a miracle to become drinkable. Only after these trials did God bring them to Elim, a place naturally flowing with abundant water and fruit trees. This step-by-step improvement was designed to soothe the people and draw their hearts toward serving God, sending a clear message that as they draw closer to Him, they will experience ever-increasing goodness [רלב״ג]. In fact, throughout all their years of wandering in the desert, the Israelites never again encountered a camping ground as comfortable and rich as this oasis [רש ר הירש].

The specific features of this location carry deep symbolic weight. The twelve springs of water correspond directly to the twelve tribes of Israel, while the seventy palm trees mirror the seventy original souls of the Israelite family who first went down into Egypt [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Interestingly, the initial arrival at Elim was not planned as a resting place. The Israelites originally had no intention of stopping there. It was only after a sudden miracle revealed the hidden springs of water that they changed their plans and decided to establish their camp in that spot [קיצור בעל הטורים].
