Proverbs 11:11Sefaria

בְּבִרְכַּ֣ת יְ֭שָׁרִים תָּר֣וּם קָ֑רֶת וּבְפִ֥י רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים תֵּהָרֵֽס׃

A person's influence on their environment reaches far beyond their private actions, radiating outward to shape the entire community. The power of noble individuals to build and elevate society stands in sharp contrast to the ability of the wicked to tear it down, with leadership and speech serving as the primary tools for both.

The foundation of a thriving society relies on the upright, who are people of high character that go beyond basic expectations to do good for others [אלשיך]. Their presence elevates their surroundings, allowing the community to stand firm and secure, whether that environment is understood broadly as an entire city [אבן עזרא, שטיינזלץ, אמרי דעת] or intimately as the very roof of a home [רש״י].

These upright individuals uplift their communities through both spiritual and practical channels. Spiritually, when God's blessing rests upon them, the rest of the inhabitants are blessed by association. They also actively pray for their home, drawing God's blessing upon it [אמרי דעת]. A historical example of this can be seen in the upright kings of Judah, whose prayers sustained the Temple [רש״י]. On a practical level, when these good individuals achieve success and take on leadership roles, their honest guidance, moral behavior, and positive speech directly elevate the community, its buildings, and its people [מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי, אבן עזרא, שטיינזלץ].

In stark contrast is the destructive power of the wicked, which is concentrated specifically in their speech. Their mouths sow ruin through gossip, lies, curses, insults, and false testimony [שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא]. This toxic speech breeds conflict and can even lead to individuals informing on fellow citizens to the authorities, resulting in severe financial ruin and harsh punishments for the community [אמרי דעת]. From a leadership perspective, when wicked and foolish individuals rise to power and the community is governed by their commands, the destruction of society becomes inevitable [מצודת דוד].

Ultimately, there is a profound gap between the effort required to build and the ease of destruction. While the upright elevate a community through dedicated good deeds and God's blessing, the malice of the wicked is so intense that the mere breath of their mouths, an effortless act compared to physical labor, is enough to bring an entire city to ruins [עמנואל הרומי]. Refusing to acknowledge the truth or the good established by the upright, the sole aim of their speech is to tear everything down [אלשיך].
