Proverbs 11:19Sefaria

Human actions map out absolute and opposing paths in the world, where the choice of goodness guarantees existence, while the chase after wickedness leads directly to destruction. The primary approach among commentators is that the path of goodness is rooted in truth, justice, and honesty It is the sheer truth of righteous giving that leads a person toward life. Others suggest that righteousness acts as a proper base and direction, forming the very foundation upon which life is built [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, this describes an upright and honest individual whose personal integrity earns him life [עמנואל הרומי]. The drive for goodness is active; an honest person does not merely wait for opportunities but actively pursues righteous deeds [עמנואל הרומי].

The life promised to such an individual is not limited to mere physical survival. It represents the attainment of true life, encompassing success in this world, the vitality of the soul, and existence in the World to Come The protective power of this righteousness is so strong that it can literally save a person from death, as illustrated by a traditional account of a man who was spared from a venomous snake bite solely because of a charitable act he performed [חומת אנך].

In stark contrast stands the one who chooses the path of wickedness. A person who chases after bad traits, holds harmful beliefs, or seeks to hurt others brings premature death and loss upon himself This pursuit of evil often extends beyond personal actions. Such an individual may not be satisfied with his own wrongdoing, but actively incites others, influencing their hearts and commanding them to chase after wickedness as well [אבן עזרא].

A different perspective connects the two opposing paths to describe a single, hypocritical character. This is a person who performs public acts of charity merely to win the trust of society, while secretly chasing after evil, robbing, and oppressing others. Under these circumstances, the outward act of charity offers no protection. Instead, it turns into an accusing force that ultimately brings about his downfall

Finally, a unique approach shifts the focus from the wicked person to the agent of harm itself. If any force or individual pursues evil against a person who has given charity, much like the venomous snake attempting to strike, that attacker will find its own death instead. The powerful merit of righteous giving creates a shield around the doer, entirely destroying anyone or anything that seeks to cause him harm [חומת אנך].
