Psalms 89:19Sefaria

True leadership in Israel is never separate from Divine providence. An earthly king draws his strength directly from God, acting as His appointed messenger. The primary approach among commentators is that the concepts of a protective shield and a reigning king both refer to this earthly leader. This points primarily to King David, King Solomon, and their successors, who serve as protectors of the nation However, another perspective views these roles across different eras, seeing the shield as a reference to King David and the king as a hint toward the future Messiah [אלשיך].

The defining trait of this royal leadership is a complete belonging to God. A worthy king is a righteous person who fears God, remains devoted to Him, and follows His paths The nation does not want an independent ruler who governs by his own authority. Instead, they seek a leader whose deep devotion makes him a connecting link between the people and God, ruling entirely by Divine power and in His name In return for this genuine reverence, God elevates the power of these kings, granting them success in their governance and victory over their enemies

Taking a unique approach, another viewpoint draws a clear distinction between two types of Divine guidance. The first type involves God's general oversight of the world through the standard laws of nature, which is naturally symbolized by the physical defense of a shield. The second type involves miraculous and supernatural care. This higher level of protection highlights a special bond between God and the nation, earned through the holiness of their actions. This intimate relationship is ultimately revealed through the miracles and wonders that actively accompany the royal dynasty of David [מלבי״ם].
