תהלים, פרק פ״ט, פסוק כ״ב

Psalms 89:22Sefaria

אֲשֶׁ֣ר יָ֭דִי תִּכּ֣וֹן עִמּ֑וֹ אַף־זְרוֹעִ֥י תְאַמְּצֶֽנּוּ׃

A divine promise of unwavering support and strength is conveyed through the powerful imagery of God's hand and arm. The primary approach among commentators is that God guarantees His constant presence and readiness to help, ensuring that His hand will remain firmly established alongside David at all times. Building upon this foundation, the imagery of God's arm serves as an additional layer of assurance, promising the courage and strength [מצודת ציון] needed to safely overcome any enemies [מצודת דוד].

The parallel between the hand and the arm reveals deeper dimensions of how God interacts with the world. One perspective distinguishes between two types of divine action. The hand represents God's response to human effort, offering assistance that joins directly with a person's own actions and preparation. The arm, however, symbolizes pure divine grace. Just as the arm physically drives the movement of the hand, this grace represents actions God takes independently, regardless of a person's merits or deeds. Thus, David is promised dual support: help that matches his own faith and preparation, alongside strength granted freely out of boundless grace [מלבי״ם].

Another viewpoint focuses on the profound impact righteous individuals have on the flow of blessing in the world. Righteous people like David actively cause God's hand to fill with abundance, much like a nursing infant naturally stimulates the flow of milk. Because David serves as a channel that awakens this worldly blessing, he receives comprehensive, all-encompassing support. In this view, the arm represents strict justice. Therefore, the promise ensures that not only will God's mercy guide him, but even the attribute of strict justice will stand by his side to grant him strength [אלשיך].
