תהלים, פרק פ״ט, פסוק ל״ה

Psalms 89:35Sefaria

לֹֽא־אֲחַלֵּ֥ל בְּרִיתִ֑י וּמוֹצָ֥א שְׂ֝פָתַ֗י לֹ֣א אֲשַׁנֶּֽה׃

The enduring nature of a divine promise stands in stark contrast to human frailty. Even when people fail to uphold their end of an agreement, God remains entirely faithful to His word. His commitment to David and his descendants is absolute and entirely independent of human actions. A clear divide exists between human behavior and divine loyalty: even if David's descendants violate the covenant made at Sinai, break the laws, and fail to keep the commandments, God maintains that He will never break His own covenant [רד״ק, אבן עזרא]. In practical terms, this absolute guarantee ensures that the kingship will never completely disappear from David's family line [מצודת דוד].

This unwavering commitment rests on two distinct aspects of the original promise. First, the covenant was established out of divine grace, making it permanently secure. Second, the promise was sealed as an oath specifically because David was a dedicated servant of God. Therefore, even if future generations stray from the right path and no longer act as His servants, the promise remains firmly in place simply because it has already been spoken by Him [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, while there is a technical legal mechanism that allows for the annulment of oaths, God testifies that He will never use it. He will not alter or take back His spoken word under any circumstances [אלשיך].
