The decline and fall of the Davidic dynasty unfolds through a painful metaphor of premature aging and public disgrace. The kingdom's early years of vitality and youth were abruptly cut short. While some understand this loss of youth literally, suggesting the king died young or his good days ended quickly [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], the primary approach among commentators views this as a symbol for the strength, power, and peak of the royal line. The golden age of the House of David was notably brief [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מאירי]. The kingdom reached the height of its growth right at its beginning, but immediately began to fade, its prime cut off far too soon [אלשיך]. This brief period of glory stands in sharp contrast to the long, drawn-out era of hardship and exile [רד״ק].

God wrapped the kingdom, as if clothing it [מצודת ציון], in defeats and failures from which it cannot recover [ביאור שטיינזלץ], leaving it doomed to loss and destruction [אלשיך]. This divine covering takes the form of deep, public shame. The king feels humiliated when facing the divine promises that now appear broken, especially as people around him declare that he has no hope left.
