תהלים, פרק פ״ט, פסוק מ״ז

Psalms 89:47Sefaria

עַד־מָ֣ה יְ֭הֹוָה תִּסָּתֵ֣ר לָנֶ֑צַח תִּבְעַ֖ר כְּמוֹ־אֵ֣שׁ חֲמָתֶֽךָ׃

After questioning the apparent broken promise of an eternal Davidic dynasty, the focus shifts from a complaint to a desperate plea regarding the unending exile. Even if the nation's punishment is completely justified, a painful cry arises over the sheer length of the suffering and the immense distance from God [מצודת דוד]. There is a profound sense that God is actively hiding. The primary approach among commentators is that God appears to look away from the hardships of the exile, holding back His salvation. As a result, every blow and downfall is experienced as a continuous withdrawal of His presence.

A unique perspective explores the tension between hoping for a set limit to the suffering and fearing it will never end. This fear is tied to the Torah's standard of what God asks of His people. The concern is that if God waits for the nation to perfectly fulfill all His demands as a strict condition for redemption, His presence will remain hidden forever. Perfect compliance is deeply difficult to achieve, and in the meantime, the nation is left vulnerable and exposed to danger [אלשיך].

A painful contrast further deepens this suffering. On one hand, God remains hidden and does not step in to save them. On the other hand, His anger is felt intensely and actively works against them [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. This wrath is compared to a consuming fire that destroys everything in its path [מצודת דוד], a harsh reality clearly seen as their daily troubles continue to multiply [מאירי].

Despite this intense hardship, there is an underlying recognition that the kingship will ultimately return to the descendants of David. Holding onto this truth, the only course of action left is to pour out a continuous prayer for this long and bitter exile to finally come to an end [מאירי].
