תהלים, פרק פ״ט, פסוק מ׳

Psalms 89:40Sefaria

נֵ֭אַרְתָּה בְּרִ֣ית עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ חִלַּ֖לְתָּ לָאָ֣רֶץ נִזְרֽוֹ׃

A profound sense of heartbreak emerges from the severed relationship between God and the leadership of the Israelites, marked by a cancelled divine promise and the deep humiliation of royal honor.

The primary approach among commentators views God's action toward His covenant as one of absolute destruction, loss, and ruin [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Others describe it as a harsh rejection and a casting away [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם], or simply the straightforward cancellation of the agreement [רש״י]. Additionally, this severing carries the heavy weight of a curse [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The shattering of this covenant is illustrated by the stripping of the leader's honor and his royal crown. There is a sharp visual contrast in this imagery: a crown naturally belongs at the highest point, resting upon the head. Throwing it down to the earth highlights the extreme depth of the humiliation [אבן עזרא]. Furthermore, this object is not just a political symbol. The crown represents holiness and divine anointing, granted to chosen kings. When it falls to the ground, it is not merely a loss of government power, but a tragic act of desecration [מלבי״ם].

Regarding the identity of the servant whose promise was broken, the primary approach among commentators understands that the subject is King David. The text mourns the rejection of the covenant made with him and the degradation of his royal line [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Offering a completely different perspective based on the destruction of the Temple, [אלשיך] reads the text as a shocked question: Is it possible that God would actually break His covenant? In this view, the servant is Abraham, and the crown is Jacob, who is considered Abraham's crowning glory. The casting of the crown to the ground describes the tragic moment during the destruction when the glory of the Israelites was thrown from the heavens down to the earth.
